In 1857, Joel Henry Clayton (1812–1872) and his two younger brothers set out and founded the town of Clayton. After years in other states he settled down at his town at the foot of Mount Diablo with his wife Margaret (1820–1908), where he and his family prospered. Clayton was named after Joel Henry Clayton but only by a coin flip. The town was co-founded by Joel Clayton and Charles Rhine, and each wanted to name it for himself. It would have become Rhinesville if Charles had prevailed.
Currently housing 17,000 people within its 9.4 square mile border, the town of Moraga was first inhabited by the Native American tribe, Saklan. Located on the 1835 Mexican Land Grant, Rancho Laguna de Los Palos Colorados, the property was given to Joaquín Moraga and named after the famous expeditionary of the Californias. Incorporated in 1974 after the communities of Moraga Town, Rheem, and Rheem Valley united, Moraga is commonly referred to as “the hidden jewel of the San Francisco bay.” Located in a valley between rolling hills, the area’s natural beauty and secure community attract both young professionals and retirees, and it is one of the wealthiest zip codes in the nation.
Voted as a top city to live and learn in 2011, Moraga boasts a highly rated school system and is home to the Saint Mary’s College of California. With 57 acres of parks, Moraga is known for its beautiful recreational areas and trails, with plenty of classes, camps, and activities for residents of all ages.
